Ah the pace of progress. New York City - my birthplace - was once the city that never slept; now, stores that were once open all night close before the Tonight Show goes off the air.
Everything is leaving the Bush Right-wing Democracy. Even our belief in democracy; in Iraq, seventy-one percent of the people, a veto proof majority, want America gone. Yet we stay.
Our claim to fast paced life, our go-go society, has gone off-shore.
Singapore, Copenhagen, and even siesta loving Madrid, are ahead of New York. Hell, NYC has fallen to eighth in the world for any people who want to get things done.
On average, city dwellers move ten percent faster than they did at the start of the Clinton era. Everything is people do is fast paced - and America is slowing down.
Even text messaging, cell phones, and the internet are against us. In the other nations, Internet and wireless services are generally superior to those in America. We are falling behind.
America has decided it would rather kill than accomplish. We are seeing it through small indicators, the pace of walking to the use of money. Consider the $500 Billion cost of the Bush-Cheney Right-wing murder of Iraqis.
If America could really afford to spend $500 Billion, without debt to China and Japan, what could we do with the money?
What could we do which might be productive; and not involve the disabling of tens of thousand of America military youth?
Which, by-the-way, is adding a trillion dollar burden to future generations.
What could we do?
Let's see:
1. Seventeen million (17,000,000) high school graduates could go to college free, and provide the nations intellectual needs for the next forty years.
2. For the next eight years, we could provide free pre-school to America's children. All that would do is prepare them for school, maybe get them reading early and enrich our labor pool in the 2030's; just when the college graduates in #1 would be hitting mid stride and be able to put these kids through college.
3. With the growing post age 65 population, we could pay for assisted care for 18 million elderly. Again relieving the current generation of the costs, and freeing money for educating the grandchildren of those elderly.
What is this Bush-Cheney Right-wing murder spree costing America?
It is costing us two or three generations of educated workers. When the medical costs come into play, we will have lost one hundred years worth of high quality workers.
How will we replace them? We are already falling behind the world.
Our corporations report record earnings, the stock market goes up, and an analysis of where those earnings come from shows they were all from overseas. American Corporations are losing money in America.
Reality beats news reports. The American economy is not really growing. What is growing is American investment overseas. But that investment doesnt pay taxes here; it doesn't employ workers here; it doesn't even buy support services here.
Everything meaningful to economic growth is being outsourced.
America is slowing down. Americans have no place to go, and are in no hurry to get there. We are quickly becoming a third world nation.
Time to go on a study tour of Mexico; time to learn the right way to practice the siesta. Mexicans are giving it up - but, check out the anti-immigration moves; we dont want their new work ethic to be practiced here. So NFTA will send the jobs there.
